| "Dennis did an outstanding job! It was obvious that he devoted hours in preparation so that we could go home with a quality ukulele." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| With the help of Big Island luthier Dennis Lake, build a quality `ukulele similar to the highly-collectable Kamaka instruments during your Aloha Camp week. We will supply all of the materials to make a very nice solid wood `ukulele. Dennis will choose both the style and woods. Space is extremely limited - so sign up soon! Everything is included to make a completely playable instrument, even a case to carry it home! Construction is the same as for any quality instrument. We'll start with a pre-bent sides, back and top of solid mango or koa - great tone woods - or a vintage cedar cigar box (another great tone wood!) then each maker will glue on the linings or "kerfing," glue braces onto the top and back, and glue the top and back onto the sides. Next we'll sand and fit the neck and glue the neck and bridge on. |

| Dennis Lake guides you through the construction process. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Shouldn't you wait till you finish, boys???? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| For the final step, you'll learn how to do the final setting up before you string up your instrument. That's right, you'll be able to play your brand-new `ukulele for the Student Concert! Along the way you will learn valuable tips about musical instrument construction and maintenence and gain a new appreciation for the luthier's art. Final finishing can be a time-consuming process; Dennis will suggest various easy-to-do finishes that you can apply when you return home. The result will be an instrument that can be compared to `ukulele costing $400 or more. Be aware that building a fine musical instrument requires a substantial time commitment - plan on spending at least three hours a day. The class meets twice each day and you must attend both a morning and afternoon session. Yes, you willl have time to take other classes. Because of the sharp tools, the adult class is not suitable for children, sorry. There is a limited amount of space, we keep the size down to the first 4 builders for each class. Priority is given to new builders. The materials cost is $150.00 and advanced sign ups are a must. Register on-line, or fax or mail your payment to the Aloha Music Camp. We'll send you a confirmation... and then start counting the days till you'll be building your own `ukulele! |
