Photos from the June 2007 Aloha Camp

Our June 2007 camp was simply wonderful. We made many new friends-let's hear it for the New York posse!-and reunited with some old pals. Our kumu went over-and-above to share their love and knowlege. Once again, award-winning film maker Kenny Burgmaier was on hand to document our beloved kupuna, Aunty Nona. And the setting at Kaupoa Beach Village couldn't be beat. It seems every day brought another delight:

  • Tommy's classes were wonderful . The keiki made colorful puppets, learned new songs and charmed everyone who came near.
  • Moana's lei making class was popular, and we all looked forward to seeing each new day's colorful creations.
  • Tuesday night's kani kapila around the campfire was so much fun. And then Liko got up and danced! Talk about chicken skin.
  • Penny Martin gave an interesting talk about traditional Hawaiian values and how we can hold them in our hearts.
  • Liko and Moana moderated a lively and informative daily discussion about traditional Hawaiian learning, protocol, values and respect. The class was so good and so important we are thinking about offerring it every year!
  • Chris Yeaton wrangled our first-ever Open Mic night on Wednesday. What a treat to hear so many great performances!
  • Late in the week, Liko felt up to offerring a class in kane hula. Judging from the cheers of the women in the hula tent, the first rehearsal was really something. The kane did great at the ho`ike, too.
  • Everywhere I looked I saw our instructors offerring one-on-one lessons. Heck, I saw our campers helping with classes, leading rehearsal. organizing kani kaplia and helping out, too. That's what makes the Aloha Camp special.
  • It was such an honor to be able to host our three scholarships: Moloka`i teacher Lucy Lambkin and Maunaloa students Aulani Hiro and Keaka Kamakana. Mahalo to everyone who helped support this valuable program.
  • On the night of the ho`ike, the moon was full and the breezes balmy and light. Everyone sang and danced their hearts out. It was a stirring show. Then we all stayed up until the wee hours playing and singing some more!

So here's a sampling of photos I took when I wasn't running around administering things. Take a look, then register on line for 2008. You don't want to miss out on the fun!

A hui hou!!! See you at Kaupoa Beach for the next Aloha Music Camp!
